England vs Pakistan A - Warm up Match

India Cricket Live

England beaten again in Pakistan

England's poor run continued when they lost by one wicket to Pakistan A in their only warm-up game ahead of five one-day matches against Pakistan. Matthew Prior (72) and Paul Collingwood (75) helped an experimental tourists' line-up make 236-7 off 45 overs. But despite James Anderson's 4-46, they were overhauled off the penultimate ball, with Bazid Khan unbeaten on 90. They rested Marcus Trescothick, Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison, while Andrew Strauss returned to action following the birth of his first child and was named captain. However, his struggle for runs continued when England were put in by Abdul Razzaq on a hazy morning, the left-hander edging a swinging Riaz Afridi delivery behind for just five. Kevin Pietersen (2) failed again but he it was a good seaming delivery from Yasir Arafat which he fell to. Reserve wicket-keeper Prior made a strong case for selection on Saturday in an innings which combined watchful defence with selective strokeplay to collect 12 boundaries. He put on 74 with Vikram Solanki (26) but after the latter mistimed a pull off Razzaq to mid-wicket, the innings revolved around Collingwood, who hit seven fours to help set up a challenging total. One incident of note was Kabir Ali's unfortunate dismissal - his full-bloodied on-drive hit non-striker Collingwood's bat and looped up for a comfortable catch at mid-on. Anderson gave England an early breakthrough by having Yasir Hameed neatly caught at second slip by Solanki. But Pakistan A were well placed at 122-2 thanks to Raffatullah Mohamand's 55 before a fine running catch on the deep midwicket boundary by Pietersen off Collingwood removed him. The Durham all-rounder struck again in his next over with the big wicket of Razzaq who edged a slower full toss on to his stumps. However, Test batsman Bazid - son of former Pakistan captain Majid Khan - batted sensibly in an 88-ball knock which featured two sixes and five fours. At 193-4 they were again cruising but in the 43rd over Anderson had Arafat caught at cover and bowled Zulqarnain Haider and Anjum to leave them on 217-8. When he ran out Tahir Khan with the second ball of the 45th over victory seemed assured for the tourists. But Bazid kept his cool, sweeping Anderson over the wicket-keeper's head to fine leg off the fourth delivery and driving to the cover boundary off the penultimate ball to clinch victory.
