Sri Lanka inflicted Pakistan's heaviest defeat in a limited-overs cricket international on Saturday, winning by 234 runs to clinch the three-match series 2-1.
Tillakaratne Dilshan's unbeaten 137 off 139 balls took Sri Lanka to 5-309 before Nuwan Kulasekera claimed 3-17 and Thilan Thushara 3-33 to bowl out Pakistan in just 22.5 overs for their fourth-lowest total of 75. Pakistan's previous biggest defeat - in terms of runs - was a 224-run loss to Australia in 2002 at Nairobi, Kenya. Kumar Sangakkara hit 50 and Sanath Jayasuriya collected 45 to also be in the runs for Sri Lanka at Gaddafi Stadium, with Umar Gul taking 3-45 and Sohail Khan 1-52 for Pakistan. Pakistan slumped to 6-18 in the ninth over before Gul hit 27 to save the team from recording their lowest total. Sri Lanka offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan became the only second bowler after former Pakistan quick Wasim Akram (502) to take 500 ODI wickets, finishing with 2-2. Muttiah Muralitharan took three for 19 and Ajantha Mendis three for 29 as the hosts were dismissed for 161 in only 34.5 overs. Tillakaratne Dilshan and Thilina Kandamby had earlier hit half-centuries to help Sri Lanka reach a challenging 290-8. Dilshan made an impressive 76 and Kandamby 59 for his maiden fifty to give impetus to the innings during their 99-run third wicket stand after Sri Lanka were sent into bat by Pakistan. Chamara Kapugedera hit two boundaries and as many sixes in his rapid 39-ball 44 and skipper Mahela Jayawardene chipped in with 24 to bolster the tourists, who are trailing 1-0 in the three-match series. Opener Salman Butt hit a sparkling century and paceman Rao Iftikhar returned career-best bowling figures as Pakistan crushed Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the first day-night international at Karachi.
The left-handed Butt scored a 117-ball 100 and put on a solid 168-run opening stand with Khurram Manzoor (83) as the home team chased down a modest target of 220 with 4.1 overs to spare at the National Stadium. The win gave Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second match will also be played today. The final match is in Lahore Saturday. Sri Lanka, who were bowled out for 219 in 45.2 overs, failed to put up a solid resistance and their celebrated spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis were rendered ineffective by Pakistan’s aggressive approach. Mendis, who was tipped to dominate the home batsmen after taking four wickets against Pakistan and six against India in Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup win here last year, failed to live up to the billing, finishing with 41-0. Butt, who reached his eighth one-day hundred with a single, hit 13 boundaries in his 117-ball knock. Manzoor, who scored his previous best of 69 against the West Indies in Abu Dhabi last year, hit nine boundaries off 128-balls before he gave a return catch to Muralitharan with just 52 needed for victory.
